Write a ReviewI often wander around Fremantle, exploring its mix of history and quirkiness. This coffee shop, Culleys Tea Rooms, fits right in. Situated on High Street, it has been a regular stop for me. The place opens early at 6 am on weekdays, which is perfect for my morning strolls. Saturdays and Sundays, they open a little later, which suits the weekend vibe.
Culleys has an average rating, which may be a reason some passersby overlook it. But I think it offers a lot more. There's a coziness in its ambiance, something comforting that keeps me coming back. The decor isn't flashy, and that's part of its charm. It's not about making an Instagram statement, but about enjoying your coffee.
The menu offers the usual suspects; lattes, flat whites, and the like. I can't compare it to a high-end barista joint, but their coffee feels reliable. In all honesty, I never expect a caffeine revelation here. It's warm, it's comforting, and it's what I need in a cup. Sometimes, I grab a pastry to go with my coffee. The pies are a hit or miss; some days they're delightful, other times a bit dry.
One of the highlights for me is that Culleys is dog-friendly. I love bringing my pup along, especially on sunny days. You'll often find a couple of other dog lovers sharing the outdoor space too. It's a casual and easy-going setting, making both me and my pup feel welcome.
Fremantle itself is packed with things to do and see. Just a short walk away is the Fremantle Markets, bustling with all sorts of goods. On weekends, I often wander around before stopping by here. There's also the Fremantle Prison, a historical site worth visiting if you're into history. But after a leisurely day out, winding down with coffee at Culleys provides a sense of calm.
The shop is accessible for everyone, with wheelchair-friendly entrances and gender-neutral toilets. It's not something you find at every Perth cafe, and it shows they care about all their customers. There's in-store shopping, takeaways, and delivery options, offering flexibility no matter your coffee mood of the day. I often sit in, but on busier days, takeaway it is!
I find their hours convenient. Whether I need a quick pick-me-up before work or a lazy Sunday morning sip, they're open. The staff is usually friendly, though like any place, there are occasional off days. With their number readily available, it's easy enough to call ahead if needed. They do tend to get busy, mainly because of their central location.
When thinking of cafes in Fremantle, many might head to the bustling Cappuccino Strip. But Culleys delivers a quieter experience. On dreary days, I take comfort in this familiar spot. On sunnier days, I appreciate the small park bench feel it gives off. However, if you're in search for intense flavors or cutting-edge brewing methods, this might not be the stop for you.
Their website is pretty basic, but it gives you a good look at what to expect. It never hurts to check their hours or menu online before heading out. I personally never had major issues, except once or twice when I showed up a bit too early on a sleepy Sunday.
It's easy to overlook this coffee shop when surrounded by so many hip places, but it deserves a bit of time. With friends or alone, it works for different moods. Fremantle surprises me constantly with its evolving scene, but Culleys remains a constant. It might not always hit the sweet spot, but every visit feels just right. It's more about the experience, the place, and a good, simple cup.
